Subliminal Hypnosis is a controversial subject but in recent years has proven beneficial in tackling anxiety and pain management.

Most of us associate the term subliminal with advertising clips interspersed with a frame now and then showing a product to purchase – which our eyes don’t see but our brain can process.

Hypnotists debate among themselves whether or not subliminal hypnosis is effective in treating patients or whether they should pass on it.

The opinions and perspectives on this topic tend to vary considerably from one hypnotist to another. Here’s some information on the subject so you can make your own decision, because in the end all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.

What is Subliminal Hypnosis?

In very general terms subliminal hypnosis can be defined as “the indistinct status of awareness and sensitive response.” The suggestive quality of this type of hypnosis can be brought about in a variety of ways. A hypnotist can give repetitive vocal instructions to a patient and ask him/her to do an array of things in order to help him or her, such as telling the person to substitute one thought for another, eye fixation, muscle recreation, levitating an arm, etc.

Subliminal hypnosis can be self induced by way of trained recreation and also by concentrating and focusing completely on one’s own breathing to the exclusion of other things. It is important to remember this kind of hypnosis is all about the intensity of suggestions and can only be encouraged through repetition.

Repetition is essential to the overall process. This type of hypnosis must be undertaken over and over again in order to have any kind of benefit for the patient.

How it Takes Place:

Subliminal hypnosis is comparable to sleep in some ways but it’s not sleep. The patient is in a relaxed calm state but the brain is much more active than it is during sleep. This is a special mental state that calls for a receptivity and sensitivity to what the hypnotist is saying and doing. An inner awareness is also an integral aspect of this kind of hypnotic practice.

It is the communication that is transmitted to the hypnotized patient from the hypnotist that is central to the treatment, and not what else is happening in the person’s surroundings. The focus is completely on the interaction that is unfolding between the two people. Whatever the hypnotist calls attention to is what the patient will focus on, to the exclusion of other elements.

The aim of subliminal hypnosis is to allow the suggestion or suggestions to find their way into the subconscious mind of the patient and stick. Once in a person’s psyche the messages will then post-hypnotically have an impact on the person’s waking conscious mind, even if he or she is not aware of it.

Subliminal hypnosis has been widely recognized in many areas of the globe as a therapeutic method that has been put to use to help many problems in the medical, dental and psychiatric spheres. In particular it is recommended for those who are preparing for surgical procedures requiring anesthesia.

Hypnosis of the subliminal variety can reduce the amount and dosage of drugs that are required. It’s also beneficial for pain and has been shown to provide relief from discomfort for those suffering from cancer.

Just as other forms of hypnosis are useful for childbirth, so is subliminal hypnosis. The labor pains of a woman in the throes of giving birth can be decreased thanks to subliminal hypnosis and it also helps to prevent any type of injury to an infant in relation to drugs. The less drugs that are required, the less harm can be done to the baby as he/she comes into the world.

Subliminal hypnosis has its skeptics, even among hypnotherapists, but when treating a patient it is another tool in the box to utilize when appropriate.
