Myths and Facts and Downright Lies About Vitamins

You can have too much of a good thing!

Lack of information or incorrect information about vitamins can lead you to make the wrong decisions about supplements, which can lead to an unhealthy body.

To learn the facts about vitamins it helps to first dispel the popular myths that you’ve likely heard more than once. Here is one that is all too common – if you take vitamins then you can eat less food.

This is not the case at all. Vitamins are meant to be a supplement to food as opposed to a substitute for food. What most people fail to realize is vitamins require the energy that comes from food.

They need proteins, fats and carbohydrates for proper absorption. For that reason it is wise for everyone to eat a combination of foods that provide them with all of the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and essential amino acids that are necessary for optimum health. Supplements are a good idea when you are suffering from a deficit of vitamins and/or minerals.

Have you ever heard if you take vitamins then you don’t have to be too concerned about eating healthy? This is a big lie. As we learned above, vitamins cannot replace a healthy diet. You still need to eat a well balanced nutritious diet every day of your life.

Here is a misconception that can be dangerous to your health – supplements must be completely safe because they’re sold in stores and online. This is not necessarily so. At the present time there is no official pre-market approval needed to sell any type of supplements, whether they be vitamins, minerals or herbal supplements.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not limit in any way the concentration or the percentage of nutrients in any supplement on the market. The one exception is that of folacin. This is why a consumer must be health savvy and realize that he or she takes a supplement at their own risk. Buyer beware at all times!

The more vitamins you take in the better it is for your overall health. True or false?

The answer is false. Vitamins have their purpose but consuming too many at a given time is not beneficial to the body whatsoever. There are water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble ones. An overdose of the latter, which includes A, D, E and K can be even worse. Don’t overdo a good thing!

The last myth we need to dispel is that organic vitamins are healthier and safer than are synthetic ones. The truth of the matter is that you know the difference between the two when you take them but your body does not know and really does not care. All that matters is that they are indeed vitamins.

However organic vitamins have one big advantage over synthetic ones in that the food that they derive from is high in fiber and other essential nutrients. This is not the case with synthetic vitamins.
