Vitamin C comes in many varieties

Vitamin C is one of the most popular of the vitamin family for a good reason – it’s a key ingredient for your body. Let’s explore how it keeps ills away.

Sometimes referred to as ascorbic acid,  vitamin C has lots of benefits. It’s also a water-soluble vitamin. Every time you pour yourself a glass of delicious tasting orange juice you need to think about the fact you’re vitalizing your life with every sip.

Those who have a plan to quit smoking require a higher quantity of this vitamin than do non-smokers.

This is because smoking depletes vitamin C from the body. Every cigarette depletes this vitamin from your system by an estimated 25 mg. Due to the cigarette habit smokers suffer from more cell damage and oxidative stress than do their non-smoking counterparts.

Diabetics also require a higher percentage of vitamin C.

Vitamin C is not made in the human body as some vitamins and minerals are which is why it must come from a variety of foods and drinks. When you have an abundance of vitamin C in your body it helps to prevent nitrates from turning cancerous (carcinogenic nitrosamines) in the body. Nitrates are a common component of many processed foods such as wieners and bologna. It’s smart to avoid processed foods whenever possible.

Did you know that vitamin C is instrumental in strengthening the walls of the many blood vessels throughout the body? And another important point worth mentioning is the eyes require a large amount of vitamin C in order to prevent the development of cataracts. The lenses of the eyes become cloudy and covered by a film when cataracts set in.

Vitamin C also helps the body to produce collagen, which is an important element of many connective tissues in the body including the skin, bones, walls of the blood vessels and the gums. It’s a kind of antioxidant, which means it reduces the amount of free radicals in the body. Free radicals are harmful molecules that destroy cells.

Vitamin C helps support the immune system in doing its job properly. It lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease.

It’s a myth consuming too much of this water-soluble vitamin can lead to an overdose. If you take too much you will not have to go to the hospital but instead you’ll need to spend a few extra minutes in the bathroom. Any excess amounts the body does not need exit the body through the urine safely.

Vitamin C works in a similar manner to aspirin. In other words this water-soluble vitamin blocks prostaglandins in the brain and helps to curb pain. A deficiency of vitamin C can lead to a number of different health conditions such as delayed healing of wounds, nosebleeds, pain and swelling of the joints and bleeding gums. A condition called scurvy, which is an excessive lack of vitamin C, was the cause of death in many of the early settlers to the country.

Become aware of your intake of vitamin C and if necessary – because of your diet – increase your recommended dosage according to your age with introducing fruits and drinks or supplements to get you up to your daily allowance.
