Summertime Sleep Suggestions for a Good Morning Wake-Up
Who doesn’t want to wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the new day ahead? The quality of your sleep plays a bigger role in your health and well being than you may think.
Not getting enough sleep can cause you to feel drowsy throughout the day and make it more difficult for you to concentrate. It can also lead to headaches and a grumpy disposition!
Not sleeping enough or having poor quality sleep can even affect your weight.
When you don’t sleep enough, especially if it becomes a constant reality in your life, you’ll likely find you’re eating more. As well, your decision making abilities may be thrown off kilter from not getting nearly enough shut eye.
The reason or reasons why sleep is a necessity of life are not clear. Sleep is something that has not been widely studied and in fact sleep research is still considered to be in its infancy stage. What is clear is that sleep is important and so is getting the right amount of sleep on a daily basis.
Here we look at some ways to help you get the summertime sleeps that you crave!
Get into a habit of going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. This is probably not what you want to hear as you contemplate sleeping in while on vacation but it is a wise move if you wish to sleep well night after night. Doing this gets your body into a sleep cycle it can become accustomed to. When you sleep late this resets your sleeping cycle and can mess up your schedule. Taken to extremes it can lead to insomnia.
Leave your bedroom curtain open a fraction of an inch in order to allow sunlight to stream through your curtains first thing in the morning. An hour of sunlight in the morning is a remedy for those who experience problems falling asleep at night. Sunlight plays a key role in resetting the body’s internal biological clock on a regular basis. Summertime is a perfect time to try this on for size. Try it and see!
Maintain a comfortable temperature in your bedroom. Keep your bedroom quiet and dark for restful sleep. Reserve your bedroom for only two important “s” activities – sleep and sex. Don’t work in your bedroom and don’t keep your computer in your bedroom. Don’t ride your exercise bike or place your treadmill in your bedroom.
In the same way, keep your bedroom uncluttered. Make it peaceful and soothing. Make it a room you want to be in when it comes time to end the day!
Sleep on a mattress that is firm but soft enough to conform to your body’s contours. In the same way, make sure you have a good pillow to lay your head on. Don’t overdo, or under do, your bedding options. Too many blankets will leave you feeling too warm and uncomfortable which will prevent you from falling asleep.
On the other hand, too few blankets could cause you to get cold and wake up in the middle of the night. Even in the heat of summer this can present a problem. Experiment with different types of pillows and different kinds of bedding to find what works best for you.
Here is one of the most significant sleep suggestions that applies all year long – when you exercise on a regular basis and maintain the proper weight you’ll find your sleep is much more restful at night and you’ll wake up feeling as alert and wide eyed as could wish for!
But do not exercise before bedtime. Exercise any time of the day, but just make sure it’s at least three hours before you turn out the lights and crawl into your cozy bed.
