Ten Ways to Improve Your Exercise Regimen (Part One)
Most people’s feelings about their exercise regimen tend to wax and wane over time. The key is to find ways to keep your level of energy and enthusiasm high.
When you’re feeling passionate about getting fit then you’ll be motivated to do it and keep on doing on. Remember exercise is about having fun and so be sure to not overdo it to the extent it becomes a chore. This is a sure way to get demotivated.
Here we explore 10 ways to keep yourself on a high note when it comes to working out and how to improve upon what you already do.
1. Change up the type of workout you do and/or modify the intensity:
Doing anything repetitively can become downright boring and stale. If you try different ways of working your body then you will keep boredom at bay.
You also should find ways to vary the intensity you put into your workouts. When you do this you’ll find conditioning plateaus are something that you will you’ll not have to cope with. If your body constantly has to adapt to new ways of moving this will improve your workouts and keep you interested in exercise! See our information on PACE Exercise Program.
2. Hire a personal trainer:
If you can afford it then hiring a personal trainer is highly recommended.
This person can offer exercise suggestions to you and will challenge you to work harder. However if you’re watching your wallet like so many people these days then another option is to find out if there are fitness instructors or pros at your local gym or fitness center who can give you some guidance in terms of what exercises are best suited to your goals. Fitness instructors can also recommend classes you might be interested in taking and teach you what you need to know about equipment safety.
3. Eat a healthy and nutritious diet every day and make sure you drink plenty of water:
This may seem very basic but it’s always an important point worth mentioning.Your body needs to be fed.
This includes your muscles as well. Never deprive your muscles either before you engage in any form of physical activity or following the activity. Your muscles need fuel to work to their highest optimum level. The more fuel you burn the more your muscles will need. The proper nutrients help to build muscle as well as to repair tissues that have become damaged.
You should always consume lots of water as well even when you don’t feel that you need it. Muscles require proper hydration to work best.
4. Quality matters more than quantity:
This is true in so many areas of life. Exercise is one of them. The intensity with which you work out is more important for weight loss and general health maintenance than is working out all of the time but less intensely.
In fact intense workouts that are done less often are more likely to yield the results you are aiming for. The body needs rest and a period of recovery after intense workouts in order to repair tissues that have bee torn down and damaged. Give your body what it needs. This is also a way to reduce the potential for injuries.
5. Your exercise routine requires some mind-body training:
You may have heard of mind-body training but are not exactly sure what it refers to. If you practice yoga or tai chi then you are already doing it!
This type of training engages both the mind and body at the same time. It has many benefits to the human body. For example it can improve balance, coordination, flexibility and muscular strength. Plus it helps to develop concentration and can bring about a feeling of relaxation.
