Weight Loss Fables – The Six Worst You Need to Avoid! (Part One)

Rid yourself of these tales and myths

Weight loss fables (otherwise known as myths or misconceptions) are everywhere you look. You find them cleverly crafted in television ads, over the Internet and in magazines and newspapers.

You also hear them over the water cooler at work, in an abundance of social settings and maybe even at your own dinner table!

This is the first of a 2-part series covering this topic.

There are many ideas about weight loss circulating that are false and in cases can be downright dangerous.

It’s not all bad news however as there are plenty of well informed professionals and average folk who can separate the true and the healthy from the not-so-true and the not-so-healthy. If you are not one of the former yet then rest assured you will be by the time you finish reading this!

Let’s begin with the three worst weight loss fables out there. If you recognize yourself in any of these then you may be relieved to know you’re not alone!

Number One – The fewer calories you consume the faster the pounds will disappear:

Cutting back on calories is important but do not starve yourself – your body needs calories for you to survive!

If you starve your body of calories then a message will reach your brain that you do not have enough to eat and this will cause your metabolism to slow down tremendously. This won’t help your weight loss goals to become a reality whatsoever. If you starve yourself then you can experience negative consequences such as lightheadedness, nausea, fatigue, problems concentrating and just generally feeling not like yourself at all.

Eventually you’ll have to give your body what it needs and it’s likely you’ll end up overeating to compensate for starving it before.

According to weight loss experts, diets that are as low as 800 to 1,000 calories per day are dangerous, unhealthy and will lead to weight loss failure. If your body thinks it’s suffering from a famine, then it immediately kicks into gear to protect you and won’t make it easy to get rid of excess weight.

Number Two – Being strict and choosing deprivation is very smart in terms of weight loss:

Yet again you’re going overboard! Being too strict with your diet or depriving yourself of any number of foods (or cutting out food groups all together) isn’t good for your body or your mind.

It’s also likely to usher in food boredom in which case you’re less likely to stick to your weight loss goals because the deprivation will get the best of you and you’ll cave into temptation!

Number Three – Never eat unhealthy foods ever again:

It’s a complete weight loss fable that if you take every unhealthy food out of your life the pounds will disappear quickly and easily. The key to losing weight long term is moderation.

Being mean to yourself in any manner isn’t going to make it happen any faster! If you still allow yourself the occasional treat then this will act as a motivator to facilitate weight loss. If you have a slice of pepperoni pizza or a burger at fries at Wendy’s don’t feel guilty about it. The same can be said if your mother offers you apple pie a la mode on a visit to her house. Just make sure you enjoy these pleasures once in a while!

In Erika’s weight loss hypnosis sessions the topic of splurge days is covered and how they should be accommodated rather than banished forever.

In part two we look at the three other most common weight loss fables many people have long come to believe as true. Read it here.
