Why I don’t believe in the Law of Attraction

Thinking of something doesn't make it happen...

I don’t believe in the law of attraction – at least the nonsense that suggests merely by thinking hard about what you want it will happen.

As you can guess “The Secret” is not high on my list of recommended readings for self-improvement. In some respects the whole notion that everything is under your control and you determine the outcome is arrogant and disenfranchising to millions of peoples of the world dealing with life threatening conflicts.

Imagine a young girl growing up in Darfur relying on the law of attraction to get through another day and not be butchered by a guerrilla soldier intent on murderous actions against a village and its women and children.

Still feel cozy about “The Secret” and its message?

Yes, it maybe extreme but then so is much of the simplistic and rose-colored view of the world the law of attraction gurus sell their products through. But on the other hand…

I don’t suggest you go through life being negative all the time as this will certainly not attract people who can help you with your goals either. There is something to be said about conveying positiveness and confidence among the people you meet that will attract other like-minded people to your circle of friends. Such a circle of friends can certainly be a positive influence on the outcomes in your life.

But this is a far cry from rocking on the front porch and dreaming of being a millionaire or whatever you want to enter your life – and letting the universe align everything for you.

Thinking positive thoughts is not enough – you’re got to live them and act on them.

The same is true of any major change in your life. If you want to stop smoking or lose weight then you’ve got to act like a non-smoker or a person who eats healthy food and exercises – no good JUST thinking about it!

You may ask, doesn’t this go against the promotion of hypnosis as a way of overcoming bad habits and life challenges?

Not at all.

Erika’s article about “Please just take out my brain and scrub it clean” is a classic example of how some people would like to pass ownership of their problems onto somebody else to fix.

The fact is hypnosis works with an individual committed to change and willing to follow through on actions after the hypnosis session. Hypnosis can’t stop cigarettes being offered to you, or a friend bringing donuts to work to celebrate Friday. Temptations are everywhere and sometimes every day, but hypnosis can certainly provide the resources for you to act in the right way when those occasions occur.

The law of attraction appears to work for some people, and those promoting it may even believe it’s real for them, but analysis of those same people is likely to reveal they actually lived their way of thinking as well.

Likewise, people who quit smoking or were successful at weight loss using hypnosis, on examination, are those who took the hypnosis beyond the hypnotherapy session, and leveraged the work of the hypnotist to be become successful through their daily actions and decisions.
