{"id":796,"date":"2010-01-24T20:52:20","date_gmt":"2010-01-25T01:52:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.smoke-free-at-last.com\/lib\/?p=796"},"modified":"2019-08-12T10:32:29","modified_gmt":"2019-08-12T14:32:29","slug":"getting-unstuck-with-powerful-nlp-reframing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smoke-free-at-last.com\/lib\/getting-unstuck-with-powerful-nlp-reframing\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Unstuck with Powerful NLP Reframing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smoke-free-at-last.com\/lib\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/glass-half-full.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-799 alignleft\" title=\"glass-half-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smoke-free-at-last.com\/lib\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/glass-half-full.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><strong>NLP Reframing<\/strong> is a technique used by therapists to help clients overcome negative thoughts that could impede progress towards a desired outcome.<\/p>\n<p>It can be learned by regular individuals to deflect negative thoughts and replace them with more positive statements to provide motivation and encouragement.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not talking about \u201c<em>positive affirmations<\/em>\u201d or \u201c<em>law of attraction<\/em>\u201d stuff here but thinking a different way or more correctly talking a differently way.<\/p>\n<p>Be aware this may require considerable effort as it can require changing your whole outlook on life as in seeing the proverbial glass as <strong>half-full<\/strong> rather than <em>half-empty<\/em>. Our view of the world \u2013 or <em>beliefs<\/em> &#8211; are heavily influenced by what we were exposed to early on in life, usually by parents.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this don\u2019t expect many years of influence and reinforcement by others to suddenly change overnight.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a simple example to start us rolling, and then we\u2019ll consider a slightly more complicated\u00a0 reframing technique.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Weight Loss Example Before:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If I have a client whose been trying to lose weight for a long time they\u2019ll usually use some variation of the following words:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I\u2019ve never been successful at losing weight<\/em>\u201d or \u201c<em>Try as I can I can\u2019t lose weight<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Left alone these words send a powerful message to the brain that you\u2019ll never be successful at losing weight, or you just can\u2019t lose weight and it doesn\u2019t matter what you do or how hard you try.<\/p>\n<p>Glass half-empty, right?<\/p>\n<p>Your subconscious mind doesn\u2019t judge those words as good or bad but hears the message and will do what it has to do to make sure it comes true.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Weight Loss Example After:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>So now we need to change the message to something like:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Up until now<\/strong> <em>I haven\u2019t been successful at losing weight<\/em>\u201d or \u201c<strong>Up until now<\/strong> <em>I haven\u2019t been able to lose weight<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, what you&#8217;ve done is put all the unsuccessful attempts behind you in the past and given yourself a clean slate moving forward. A new chance unencumbered by previous failed attempts.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it is a small change in words and subtle, but it\u2019s a powerful reframe technique, and sends a completely different message than before to our subconscious.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take this to the next level.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Context Reframe:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A context reframe is when you reinterpret a behavior viewed as negative to view it as a positive trait. For example you may have a family member or friends you view as \u201ctoo aggressive\u201d or \u201ctoo quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>View those individual\u2019s in different context where \u201cbeing aggressive\u201d will help an individual succeed because they don\u2019t let anything stand in their way, or the person who is \u201ctoo quiet\u201d hasn\u2019t got a big ego and provides an opportunity for others to shine.<\/p>\n<p>Context reframe takes a little more skill and practice but it\u2019s where therapists utilizing NLP Reframing spend a lot of time as it requires interpretive skills.<\/p>\n<p>Reframing is a powerful tool and the person who can reinterpret negative thoughts so it empowers will help not only themselves but others.
