You can dispel myths yourself

In part one of Quitting Smoking – Doing Away with the Misconceptions series we learned some common fallacies about smoking that can cause problems when it comes to kicking the habit for good.

In part two we continue with our look at more misconceptions and the truths that you need to understand to become a successful non-smoker.

Have you ever been told that you can suffer a relapse with no warning that it is about to take place? Pay this no mind as it is not true.

The truth of the matter is that relapses never just happen with no prior warning. Instead, thoughts of smoking again take root in our heads and grow from there.

It’s normal to have thoughts of cigarettes as you begin to recover and heal. It’s when those thoughts are self-defeating and destructive (and very frequent) that they can gain a foothold and can lead to a relapse.

Nip those negative thoughts in the bud.

Turn them around so that they are productive as opposed to counterproductive for your efforts.

If you think that you’ll always miss the smoking habit then you need to gain more control over your thoughts. Every one of us has the ability to alter our patterns of thinking and you can do it at any time. Be aware that “true freedom is a state of mind.”

If you can break the positive associations that you have with smoking then you will be able to let go of the intimate connection you had with it. Stop thinking of smoking as a romantic notion and recognize that it was an unhealthy dirty habit that damaged your health and messed with your mind. It is time to exercise more freedom within your life and to realize that nicotine addiction no longer has you ensnared in its web.

Your thoughts are powerful and you have control over what you think. If you still feel that you are being held hostage by your cigarettes then what you need to know is that in actuality it is not cigarettes that are doing this to you but your own thoughts. Break free of negative thinking patterns and enjoy your new found freedom because you’ve earned it!

Once you no longer have the physical yearning to smoke then you can work on retiring the mental relationship you have with it because the ties that a person develops with smoking can be very strong! The ties you have are based upon comfort and ritual and that is what you must release from your life. Once you have done that then you can continue along the road to recovery and the road to a healthier lifestyle.
